Twin hurricanes: Iselle and Julio
Today my family and I should be boarding a cruise ship in Hawaii. We planned this trip eight months ago to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. We cancelled the trip a few weeks ago because my husband's mother received a diagnosis of ovarian cancer and was to begin treatment shortly before we were leaving. Luckily we had paid for trip insurance and would get our money back.
I had been feeling for the month before we cancelled that we were not going on the trip for some reason. I had a strange feeling about the whole thing, which I shared with some friends. Now it turns out two hurricanes were heading for the islands at exactly the time we were set to fly to Hawaii. In fact, our scheduled flight had a 15 hour delay in LA because of Hurricane Iselle.
I think the lesson for me is to trust my inner voice. I knew I wasn't going on that trip and now I am so relieved I am not boarding a possibly rocky boat after a hellish 24 hours of travel time. Sometimes it is not what we do but what we don't do that matters.
Still, there is some sadness about the road not taken. I sometimes believe there is an alternate me with an alternate family that did not cancel this trip and is just now preparing to meet the ship in the port in Honolulu. I think that may a concept from quantum physics: the idea that all of our decisions (or non-decisions) play out in an alternate universe.
Either way, I send blessings to that alternate family and to all of the others who are actually boarding the ship right now.
